New Delhi: Delhi Assembly on Monday adopted a resolution to give a status of "Martyr" to the NDMC official MM Khan who was killed last month after he refused to take bribe allegedly to hush up a matter of a hotelier. The proposal was moved by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Speaking in the assembly Kejriwal sought a fair probe in the matter and said that police was not doing its work properly.

"It is unfortunate that Delhi police is not under the Delhi government. Had it been under our government, the murderers of M.M. Khan would have been caught and hanged," Kejriwal said.

Blaming the investigation of not satisfactory, Kejriwal said, "name of a person close to home minister has surfaced, I don't know what his role is but police should have at least questioned him," making an obvious reference to New Delhi Municipal Corporation vice-chairman Kanwar Singh Tawar.

Kejriwal said that Khan took pride in his honesty and rejected several offers of bribes in his life.

"Khan was an honest and brave officer. He knew that his life was in danger and still he chose the path of honesty and rejected the bribe of several crore rupees...," Kejriwal said.

Khan, 58, was shot dead outside his house in south Delhi's Jamia Nagar on May 16. The NDMC, on the directions of the home ministry, has offered a job to Khan's wife on compassionate grounds.

Delhi government had announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore to Khan's family members while Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had announced an ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh to the bereaved family.
