New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party MP and former Mumbai Police commissioner Satyapal Singh was allegedly stopped at India Gate on Friday for travelling in an even-numbered car, despite it being a day for odd-numbered cars.

However, speaking to India Today, Singh said, “Yes, my car was even numbered but I was not challaned. I belong to the exempted category. I wasn't stopped by any constable. I called the constable to find out the venue of an event I went to. I am a law abiding citizen and there is no question of violating the law. I have been a police commissioner myself.”

Initial reports claimed that Singh’s vehicle was not issued a challan, but the traffic police handed him a leaflet with car rationing rules.

Singh had won 2014 General Elections from Bhaghpat in Uttar Pradesh.

The odd-even formula was implemented in Delhi on January 1, 2015 and will continue for 15 days.
