Mumbai rains: BMC responsible for Dr Deepak Amrapurkar's death, says IMA

Mumbai: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Thursday held Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) responsible for the death of renowned gastroenterologist of the Bombay Hospital Dr Deepak Amrapurkar.

Body of missing Dr Amarapurkar was found washed up in a drain near the seashore at Worli.

He went missing near the Elphinstone Road station following heavy rains which lashed the megapolis.

The 58-year-old doctor fell into a manhole while he was walking towards his residence.

Dr Amarapurkar had left for home Tuesday evening by his car but due to water logging on the road he asked his driver to drop him near the Elphinstone Road station.

Akin to the great floods of July 2005 when the financial city was buried under 945 mm rainfall on a single day, Mumbaikars were mostly left to fend for themselves on Tuesday when it rained about 316 mm, paralysing the megapolis.

The citizens alleged that the BMC, India's richest civic body with an annual budget of over Rs 25,000 crore and cash reserves of over Rs 61,000 crore, totally let down the citizens who battled all odds to survive and remain safe or unhurt.
