Cauvery water row: Events as they unfolded on Tuesday

Prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC and thereafter curfew orders in 16 PS limits will continue as already ordered: Bengaluru Police Commissioner.

The Chennai police today cautioned against circulating "false information" on social media on the Cauvery issue and warned of appropriate legal action against offenders.

Police said it has come to notice in the last two days that some "miscreants" were attempting to promote enmity and hatred with an intention to incite violence, by "posting false information in the social media relating to incidents in Karnataka over the Cauvery issue".

"Such acts are considered as serious offences under penal laws and offenders will be prosecuted accordingly. Stringent legal action has already been initiated against such miscreants who had committed such acts," a city police release said.

Puducherry Pradesh Congress committee today asked the Karnataka government to take stern action against those indulging in violence and vandalism over Cauvery water issue.  A meeting of the executive committee of the PCC adopted several resolutions including one on the Cauvery issue.

The resolution said "the current extraordinary situation in Karnataka on Cauvery water issue has come to cause concern. Innocent Tamils have been attacked and their properties are damaged." It requested the Karnataka government to take stern measures against 'perpetrators of violence' and ensure that Tamils were provided appropriate protection.

In the backdrop of violence in Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka over the Cauvery water issue, the Hyderabad police today issued advisory to TV channels asking them not to air visuals pertaining to the violence, which may potentially create law and order problem.

"It has been brought to the notice of the Authorised Officer under The Cable TV Networks ( Regulation) Act 1995, that visuals having huge potential for inciting mob violence which relate to the ongoing violence in Bangalore (Bengaluru) city are being transmitted/retransmitted through the Cable TV Networks in Hyderabad city," the police said in a statement, as per PTI.

The violence in the Cauvery water dispute claimed its second life on Tuesday, as an uneasy calm hung over worst-hit Bengaluru amid sporadic protests in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu marked by targeted attacks.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who has written to Narendra Modi to intervene in the matter, is likely to meet the Prime Minister tomorrow.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist expresses "shock and dismay" over the violence over the Cauvery river in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. "Such disputes can only be resolved through negotiations and a mutual agreement on how these waters are to be shared."

The Tamil Nadu Police arrests at least 30 activists of Tamil outfit Naam Tamizhar Katchi (NMK) when they tried to stage a demonstration in front of Karnataka Association office in Coimbatore in protest against attacks on Tamils in Karnataka over the Cauvery issue. 

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issues an advisory appealing media to exercise restraint while covering incidence of violence and rioting. "Some TV channels have also been airing footage of violent incidents, rioting, etc repeatedly. These could further ignite tensions and reactions and could cause the law and order situation in both the states to deteriorate," the advisory read.

One person, who was injured yesterday after he fell from a building while trying to flee police in Ramanagara, dies. Two people have died in protests. "Kumar, about 30 years old, has died. He was brought to our hospital at 9:30 last night in a critical stage.He is said to have jumped from third floor of a building as he was trying to escape from a lathicharge yesterday," Dr Giridhar, managing director of Lakshmi Multi-Speciality Hospital, told PTI. "He had several injuries on his body like head,?facial and pelvic. Both his legs were also fractured," he said.

It is difficult to follow SC's order, but we cannot disobey or reject it as it would violate the Constitution. Violence will be dealt with an "iron hand", says CM Siddaramaiah.

An additional 700 riot control police personnel have been rushed to Karnataka to tackle the situation arising out of the protests over Cauvery river water sharing. With this, a total of 1,700 paramilitary personnel have been deployed in violence-hit areas of Karnataka for maintaining law and order.

Karnataka Director General of Police Om Prakash​ tells CNN-News18 that 385 people have been arrested in the wake of the violence. He adds that curfew will be reviewed today.

Cauvery water sharing row: Central forces deployed to assist Bengaluru Police

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddharamaiah holds high-level meeting to review the law and order in the state.

The Bengaluru Police tweets that BMTC (Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation) buses have started plying on city roads.

A bus that was half burnt yesterday was torched once again today near New Timber layout and another vehicle was also set on fire near Tigalarapalya. Both had Tamil Nadu registration number plates.

The Karnataka police personnel and Indo-Tibet Border Police (ITBP) force conduct flag march in Mandya.

Incidents of stone pelting have been reported from Heggenhalli in Bengaluru. One person has been detained in this regard.

The Bengaluru Police urges citizens not to pay heed to social media-fuelled rumours that were causing panic. In a bid to allay fear among citizens, police personnel took the help of social media. Through its Twitter handle @BlrCityPolice, they advised people to not believe or spread rumours and follow them for an accurate version of the proceedings. 

The Hyderabad Police issues an advisory to all cable TV channels/cable TV network operators over protests in Bengaluru and said no program shall be transmitted in the cable service which is likely to incite violence or contains anything against maintenance of law and order.

"Curfew has been clamped in 16 areas across the city and ban order issued under Section 144 of the CrPCA across the city to maintain law and order and prevent angry protestors from indulging in violence, arson or loot during Eid and Onam," said city Police Commissioner NS Megharikh.

In a related development, police imposed curfew for three days from early Tuesday in Bengaluru's north-west, south-west, north east and central areas to maintain peace and prevent untoward incidents in the festival week, beginning with Bakrid on Tuesday, Onam on Wednesday and immersion of Ganesha's idols on the 10th day (Thursday).

Umesh, 25, hailed from Kunigal in Tumakuru district, about 70 km from Bengaluru.

One person was killed and two others injured in police firing last night in tense Bengaluru, where curfew has been imposed in 16 sensitive localities. "The victim (Umesh) succumbed to bullet injuries he suffered when police fired to disperse a mob attempting to torch a patrolling vehicle after ransacking a provision shop in the city's northern suburb," said a police official early on Tuesday.
