BJP's victory celebrations in Delhi: As it happened

I once again thank people states for voting for BJP. It does not matter as to whether one voted for us or not. All that is only till elections. Government is meant for all and has to work for all - PM Modi.

People ask why does the PM work so hard. I am happy that people ask me that - PM.

In 2014 I had said we are new, I can make mistakes but had also said that we will never do anything with wrong intentions. Second, I had said we will be the epitome of hard work. And third I had said that whatever we do, we will do with certain credentials - PM Modi.

PM Modi thanks people of 5 states for support to BJP, promises to deliver.

I would like to thank the voters of the five states, want to assure them that we will leave no stone unturned for the betterment, says PM Modi.

In 2022 we mark 75 years of independence, which will be a landmark moment for the nation, says PM Modi. 

We have never got anything for free or easily. And we do not have any regrets. We are not those who looks at things only from an election perspective - PM Modi.

There are many reasons for a win but such an empathetic win after such a record turnout is special and makes everyone think, says PM.

The BJP on Saturday stormed back to power in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand securing landslide wins while the Congress achieved a similar feat in Punjab and emerged as the single largest party in Goa and Manipur which threw up a hung Assembly.

The BJP retured to power in the politically crucial state of UP after a gap of 14 years during which regional parties such as the SP and the BSP held sway.

Showing astonishing performance, the BJP got 312 seats in the 403-member Assembly. Its allies Apna Dal(S) and SBSP bagged nine seats and four seats, respectively, taking the total tally of the combine to 325.

On the other hand, the SP won 47 seats while its ally the Congress got 7 seats. The BSP won just 19 seats, finishing a dismal third.

As the Assembly elections in the five states turned into a virtual referendum on Modi's popularity and demonetisation, the BJP decimated the ruling SP, its alliance partner Congress and Mayawati's BSP in UP.

In Uttarakhand, the BJP won 56 of the 70 seats in the state, reducing Congress to minuscule minority in the state Assembly with a poor tally of 11 seats.
