Karnataka bypoll results 2018: Will work with Congress to win all 28 LS seats, says CM Kumaraswamy

Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure to that no untoward incident takes place during the counting of votes.

BENGALURU: Congress and JDS have secured a massive lead in four out of five seats, while BJP is leading in just one seat. As per latest reports, Congress' Nyamagouda has won the Jamkhandi assembly seat while Ugrappa is leading in Bellary seats respectively. JDS' Anitha Kumaraswamy and Shivaramegowda have bagged Ramanagaram and Mandya seats.

BJP's Raghavendra has won the Shimoga LS seat.

Counting of votes for three Lok Sabha seats of Shimoga, Bellary and Mandya, and two assembly constituencies of Jamakhandi and Ramanagara began on Tuesday morning. The counting is being held at five centres, one each in five constituencies. 

Elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure to that no untoward incident takes place during the counting of votes, police officials said.

A total of 31 candidates were are contesting from all the five constituencies. The results of the bypolls are being viewed as a litmus test for the ruling Congress-JDS alliance and Opposition BJP. 

In the fray are Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's wife Anita Kumaraswamy, state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa's son B Y Raghavendra and former Chief Minister S Bangarappa's son Madhu Bangarappa and others.

Senior Congress leader and Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said the lesson of the 4-1 victory in the parliamentary and assembly bypolls in Karnataka is that the alliance has turned out beneficial.

"The 4-1 win in the Karnataka bye-elections is similar to the Test series of Indian cricket team led by Virat Kohli. Lesson to be learnt: Alliance has turned out to be beneficial," Chidambaram tweeted.

The announcement of the bypolls for the Lok Sabha seats came as a surprise to all the three major political parties in the state -- the Congress, BJP and JD(S) -- who questioned the need for the exercise when the general elections are due early next year. The byelections were necessitated after Yeddyurappa (Shivamogga), Sriramalu (Ballari), and C S Puttaraju of JD(S) (Mandya) resigned as MPs following their election to the Karnataka Assembly. Bypolls to Jamkhandi Assembly seat was necessitated due to the death of Congress MLA Siddu Nyamagouda, while Ramanagara fell vacant after Kumaraswamy gave up the seat, preferring Chennapatna, the other constituency from where he had also won.

Counting of votes begins to Shimoga, Bellary and Mandya Lok Sabha seats and Ramanagara and Jamakhandi legislative assembly seats began at 8 am.

A total of 31 candidates are in the fray from the five seats. Among the prominent candidates in the fray is Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy's wife, Anita Kumaraswamy, who is expected to have a smooth sail in Ramanagara after BJP nominee L Chandrashekhar withdrew from the contest and rejoined the Congress.

In Jamkhandi, Congress candidate Anand Nyamagowda, son of former MLA Siddu Nyamagouda, is pitted against Srikant Kulkarni of the BJP.
In Shivamogga, state BJP chief B S Yeddyurappa's son, B Y Raghavendra, is testing his fortunes against another former chief minister S Bangarappa's son, Madhu Bangarappa, of the JDS.
In Ballari, senior BJP leader Sriramulu's sister, J Shantha, is fighting against V S Ugrappa of the Congress, considered an outsider.
In the Vokkaliga bastion of Mandya, JDS' Shivarame Gowda, is pitted against a fresh face in Dr Siddaramaiah, a retired Commercial Tax officer from the BJP.

The Lok Sabha by-elections were held to fill vacancies caused by the resignation of its three sitting members -BJP`s Yeddyurappa from Shimoga and Sriramaulu from Bellary and C. Puttaraju of the JD-S from Mandya on being elected to the assembly in the May 12 elections.

The Ramanagara by-poll was held to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Kumaraswamy, who retained the adjacent Channapatna assembly segment after contesting and winning from both the seats in the May 12 state elections.
