Srinagar: Unknown gunmen on Tuesday snatched a car from a civilian in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, triggering an alarm.

Security forces were put on an alert after the gunmen took away the white colour car of a man at Samboora in Pulwama district, about 32 kms from here, a police official told reporters.

The owner of the car told the police that he had purchased the vehicle recently and it did not have a permanent registration number yet, the official said.

"Police have sounded an alert. All the police stations, control rooms and security agencies have been alerted following the hijacking of the car by suspected militants. We have alerted government forces along National Highway to foil any attack by suspected militants," the officer said.

He said the security forces have been asked to keep a vigil for any suspicious car matching the description of the stolen vehicle as it can be used by the gunmen for subversive activities.

Meanwhile, just after the report of car being hijacked surfaced, gunshots created panic in Kralcheck village of Chadoora in Budgam district.

"We have received a report that about 20-40 gunshots were heard at Kralcheck. There was however no report of injuries or death. Police are ascertaining the facts," adding that the security has also been alerted from Budgam.

Meanwhile, militants this evening attacked a police party at Kumdalan village of Shopian district in south Kashmir. Official sources said that the militants attacked a cavalcade of senior officers at Shopian but there were no injuries to anyone.
