De Dana Dan

Mumbai: The troika of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal is back with a bang. After the cult comedy caper ‘Hera Pheri’ (2000), director Priyadarshan once again brings back the fabled trio for his yet another laughter riot ‘De Dana Dan.’
Although ‘De Dana Dan’ hits the Box Office almost after a decade of ‘Hera Pheri,’yet, the movie is a brilliant example of Priyadarshan’s craftsmanship when it comes to handling the genre of comedy. Even though the fabled director may keep saying that he loves realistic cinema; time and again his comic capers have proved that slapstick genre rules the roost when it comes to Box Office success.
For starters, ‘De Dana Dan’ is in no way a sequel to ‘Hera Pheri’ even though it repeats the latter’s male leads. Well, the movie hardly shows Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal in a single shot except the sidesplitting chaotic climax.
‘De Dana Dan’ is the story of a driver Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) and a courier boy Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty). Despite being losers in their own way, both protagonists have girlfriends (Katrina and Sameera respectively). With money being a necessity for Nitin and Ram, both plan a kidnap, that too of a dog!
With an ensemble of numerous character artists, the entire action of ‘De Dana Dan’ unfolds in a five star hotel; much akin to the lines of 1992 Hollywood flick ‘Blame it on the Bellboy.’ However, the kidnapping goes horribly wrong when Akshay gets locked in a wardrobe for an hour. Finally, with a fumbling Sunil Shetty and an equally lost Paresh Rawal, it’s up to the remaining two to save the show with the climax leading to a deluge with the movie turning out to be a roaring comedy.
In all, ‘De Dana Dan’ is a brisk paced film where storyline and characters hardly leave you any time to think! The first half is a bit slow paced but by the time one reaches the second half; the flick picks up momentum and leaves the audience in splits with all its confusion and commotion.
Well, the troika of Akshay, Paresh and Sunil hardly lives up to its ‘Hera Pheri’ image as the trio fails to revive their old chemistry. Instead of the main starcast, much humour is educed by Archana Puran Singh, Johnny Lever, Asrani, Rajpal Yadav, Chunky Pandey and Manoj Joshi. Unluckily, ‘De Dana Dan’ lacks originality in dialogues and is in a dire need of whacky one-liners.
Talking about the females in ‘De Dana Dan,’ Katrina, Sameera, Aditi Govitrikar and Neha Dhupia are much like the embellishment, which hardly adds any punch to the farcical storyline. In all, ‘De Dana Dan’ could have been a better comedy, courtesy a crisp editing, witty one-liners, genuine gags and above all, chemistry of the lead pair!
Ratings: Three cheers for this one!
