Scotland’s Kolkata campaign
|
|
London, Nov 10: The Scottish government has launched
a campaign to renovate some of India's finest imperial
buildings in Kolkata.
Michael Russell, Scotland's culture and external affairs
minister, signed an agreement during a recent visit to India
that will lead to conservation and restoration work, focusing
on buildings in Kolkata associated with Scottish organisations
and businesses.
The campaign will lead to the restoration of the
staircases and peeling walls of buildings such as the city's
Duff College, which is named after the Scots missionary and
pioneering educationalist Alexander Duff.
A priority case is reported to be the Roxburgh Building,
a Georgian mansion in Kolkata's Botanical Gardens built by
Scot William Roxburgh, described as the father of Indian
botany.
James Simpson, a leading Scottish conservation architect
who is involved with the restoration project, said there were
buildings that were in "urgent need" of help.
A Scottish Government spokesman said, "Following Mr
Russell's recent visit to India, we are at the early stages of
looking at how the Scottish Government can assist in the
renovation of a number of the country's historic sites with a
distinct Scottish influence.
