Mumbai: National award winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has done it again! Married to reality, the filmmaker who has often weaved awe-inspiring real stories on reel has once again exposed the evils gripping our legal system as he goes behind bars for ‘Jail’. Known for his penchant for realistic cinema, Bhandarkar’s films have often been looked upon as an exposé on society and ‘Jail’ is no different in this regard.
A typical Bhandarkar flick, ‘Jail’ has all the elements that have come to describe the taskmaster. It’s hard-hitting, shocking yet relatable and thought provoking but certain flaws and exaggerated emotions leave the film short of a blockbuster.
The film begins with Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) who is an ambitious lad. Out to conquer the world, Parag has everything going for him. From a cushy job to a loving girlfriend Mansi (Mugdha Godse), Parag had a bright future ahead until it all went haywire.
Unaware of his roommate’s real identity, Parag is caught in web of drugs and deceit. A drug-dealer Parag`s best friend gets him involved in a drug racket as he slips into a coma. And here’s where the nightmare beings.
Next thing you know, Parag is in police custody and then at Thane jail. Awaiting his trail, he is forced to spend two years in custody. What’s more is that even after his trail begins, it’s further delayed by legal glitches.
Fighting for his innocence, Parag is left clueless about his case and is forced to spend a harrowing 8 years sentence. As for the performances go, ’Jail’ is an out an out Neil Nitin Mukesh flick. Be it his body language or dialogue delivery, the actor emerges as an actor par excellence with this one.
As for Mugdha the lass has done justice to her role. A small part, the stunner plays a desperate lady waiting for her lover to perfection.
Overall the flick has a strong plot, gripping performances but ends up being too predictable.
Rating: Three cheers for this one!
