Windsor Castle goes veg for climate meet
|
|
London, Nov 05: An all vegetarian, non-alcoholic meal was served at the Windsor Castle for the first time in history as representatives of all major faiths of the world, including Hindu and Sikh, assembled here for a conference on climate change.
A diet that included a salad of roasted English pear with cobnuts and pearl barley risotto was served to representatives of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Daoist, Shinto and Bahai`i faiths who met at Windsor Castle yesterday for the conference hosted by the Duke of Edinburgh.
The conference that discussed initiatives for protecting the planet and combating climate change was attended by all members of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, a group launched by the Duke in 1995.
To meet the diverse dietary requirements of the 200 guests, an "ethical, faith-consistent and environmentally friendly" vegan banquet was prepared - the first such meal in the Castle`s history.
Alcohol was absent, so was bottled water, with the delegates offered a choice of tap water or cranberry juice, the Daily Telegraph reported.
The Windsor Castle was first built as a wooden castle by William the Conquerer in 1070-1086 AD. A stone castle was built later over the original building.
