British court defends NRI reporter
|
|
London, Nov 05: A British court has defended an NRI reporter who used karate chops in self defence after he was subjected to a barrage of abuse by two drunken men.
Paresh Patel, 46, had been followed for half an hour through Manchester city centre on September 11 by two men, who subjected him to a barrage of abuse as he attempted to set up a live broadcast.
But Patel eventually retaliated, flooring one of them. CCTV footage showed the dazed victim scrambling to his feet as police arrived.
Sean Brady, prosecuting told Manchester magistrates` court that when Patel phoned his studio, John Nugent, 22, and David McKenna, 27, thought he was ringing the police and began swearing and threatening him.
Sentencing Judge David Hernandez said: "He (Patel) defended himself, he delivered a blow. I say good for Patel. He had no reason to be subjected to that level of abuse and threat by you."
Nugent and McKenna, both from Manchester, admitted charges of affray and assaulting Patel. McKenna was given a community order for 18 months with supervision and 14 hours of unpaid work. Nugent was given an 18-month supervised community order.
