Mumbai: With slick underwater promos of sizzling Lara Dutta in two-piece bikinies and Akshay jiving with Kylie Minogue, Anthony D’Souza’s ‘Blue’ became the most awaited Diwali release. Riding high on almost eighty to hundred crore, ‘Blue’ is one of the most expensive flicks ever made in the Hindi cinema.
Starring Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Ditt, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif, ‘Blue’ carries a lot of star attraction with AR Rahman as the music director, international pop star Kylie Minogue, multi-talented Pete Zucarini- the director of photography from ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ that makes it a true-blue Bollywood Diwali bonanza. However, with an illustrious star cast and equally celebrated technicians, ‘Blue’ ends up as a mediocre flick that offers nothing except a clichéd underwater thriller.
‘Blue’ revolves around the underwater dangers as well as the untold riches lying buried in the deep water. Canned in one of the grandest locales, the Bahamas, ‘Blue’ offers some great underwater shots, adrenaline rushing chases and Lara Dutta’s million dollar bikini act!
Yet, despite all the picturesque details, a shoddy script and corny dialogues leave ‘Blue’ in all despair. In ‘Blue’, Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is a skilled diver who lives in the scenic Bahamas and befriends Aarav (Akshay) – a rich businessman whose obsession is to find a treasure trove in a sunken ship ‘Lady in Blue.’
Initially, Sagar refuses to unearth the prized treasure as his father died in a sea accident. However, with his younger brother entangled with Bangkok baddies, Sagar finally gives his consent to discover the treasure. During this entire treasure chase, what surprises most is the fact that when the guys find the treasure, they find it with such an ease that one wonders why it was not discovered by anyone so far!
Blessed with dim-witted dialogues, ‘Blue’ ends up as a ruined affair thereby wasting all the moolah its producers pumped in. Akshay looks dashing with his well sculpted body and so does Lara Dutta whose bikini act is worth a dekko. With his protruding belly, Sanjay Dutt simply fails to convince as a sea diver and on the other hand, with Zayed Khan spending most of his time speeding on his bike, he hardly gets a time to showcase his acting prowess (if any!).
In totality, ‘Blue’ is a damp squib that fails to live up to the expectations it had raised. But for the overdone hype, it might have earned better ratings.
