Bengal Panchayat Election Results: TMC Wins Over 12,000 Seats, BJP Distant Second

West Bengal Panchayat Election Result 2023 Updates: The voting for the 73,887 seats was held on July 8 while repolling was held on around 700 booths on July 10.

West Bengal Panchayat Election Result 2023 LIVE Updates: Counting of votes for the violence-marred West Bengal Panchayat Elections 2023 is underway in the state amid tight security arrangements. According to the latest declarations by the State Election Commission, the TMC has won in 12,518 gram panchayat seats and is leading in 3,620 seats. Its nearest rival BJP has won in 2,781 seats and is leading in 915 seats out of 63,229 seats as of 3.30pm. The Left Front has won in 959 seats out of which the CPI(M) alone has won in 910 seats. The party is currently leading in 550 seats. The Congress won 625 seats and is leading in 276. Other parties which included the newly formed ISF won 219 seats and led in 70 seats, while independents which included TMC rebels won 718 seats and led in 216 seats. Counting of votes for the three-tier panchayat polls to nearly 74,000 seats which besides the gram panchayat seats, also includes 9,730 panchayat samiti seats and 928 zilla parishad seats, began at 8 am on Tuesday peacefully amid tight security, officials said.

There are around 339 counting venues spread across 22 districts. The maximum number of counting centres is in South 24 Parganas at 28, while the minimum is in Kalimpong at four. Some northern districts are also facing inclement weather. "Counting began at 8 am and is likely to continue for the next two days. It will take time for the ballots to be counted and the results to be compiled," an SEC official said. In Darjeeling hills, out of the 598 seats in Darjeeling and 281 in Kalimpong, the BGPM was leading in 21, whereas the BJP was head in one, and the independents were leading in four. All the counting venues are manned by armed state police personnel and central forces, with prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC being imposed outside the venue to avoid any untoward incidents. There are a total of 767 strong rooms across 22 districts.

BJP national president JP Nadda on Monday nominated a four-member fact-finding committee to visit the violence-hit areas of the state and send a report. The team will visit Kolkata today. The voting process concluded on Monday after the state election commission (SEC) mandated a re-polling at 696 booths across 19 districts due to reports of violence at multiple polling stations on the first day.

All counting centres will have a deployment of Central forces and CCTV cameras installed. Repolling took place at 696 booths across five districts of the state on Monday. The Congress and the BJP are in no mood to let go ruling TMC and the State Election Commission off the hook after the violence-marred rural polls. While the Congress has already approached the Calcutta High Court seeking a probe and compensation, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly Suvendu Adhikari said that the BJP lawyers will present a case before the court.  "The BJP will present their case regarding faulty voting practices during the Panchayat polls before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday so that repolls are conducted in those places in a fair manner under the supervision of central forces....Tomorrow, our lawyers will present these points in the High Court so that repolls are conducted in those places under the supervision of central forces like today....SEC had taken out voters from polling booths and killed them, they need to pay compensation to them," he said.

The panchayat elections were held for 3,317 Gram Panchayats, 341 Panchayat Samitis and 20 Zila Parishads in West Bengal. Security forces from the Centre, as well as the state, were deployed on all 61,636 polling booths. The state Election Commission had set up a total of 61,636 polling booths across the state. A total of 59,000 personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and other State Armed Police (SAP) forces have been deployed at sensitive polling booths and the rest of the troops of CAPF and SAP along with local State Police were given the responsibility of security at the remaining polling booths.

Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Monday moved to the Calcutta High Court seeking a probe into the violence that took place during the Bengal panchayat polls. The Calcutta High Court allowed Chowdhury to file a petition seeking compensation to victims of panchayat poll violence in West Bengal and an investigation into it by an independent agency.
