Uttar Pradesh urban local body polls live updates: Voting for the second and the final phase of urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh is currently under and is being held in 38 districts, including Ghaziabad, Meerut, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur and Ayodhya. Voting began at 7 am today and will continue till 6 pm. According to the State Election Commission (SEC), over 1.92 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes to elect their representatives in the second phase.

In the final phase of UP local body polls, as many as 39,146 candidates are in the fray for 6,929 posts, which includes seven mayors and 581 corporators. Apart from this, voting will be held to elect 95 chairpersons and 2,520 members of nagar palika parishads, and 267 chairpersons and 3,459 members of various nagar panchayats. The SEC said 77 representatives, including nine corporators in this round, have been elected unopposed.

The first phase of voting was held on May 4 and the votes for both phases will be counted on May 13. The polls are considered significant as political parties are trying to showcase their strength ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

UP ULB Elections 2023: Several prominent leaders were among the early voters including state Finance Minister Suresh Khanna who exercised his franchise at a school located at Diwan Jograj, Cooperatives Minister JPS Rathore and PWD Minister Jitin Prasad, who voted in Shahjahanpur.

Speaker of the state Assembly Satish Mahana also cast his vote in Kanpur and minister of state (independent charge) for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Arun Kumar in Bareilly.

Union minister and Apna Dal leader Anupriya Patel cast her vote in Mirzapur and said that efforts were on to ensure the progress of the district. Apna Dal, notably, is an alliance partner of the BJP.

UP Nikay Chunav 2023 Latest Updates: The Samajwadi Party has alleged that supporters of the BJP were indulging in malpractices, especially in Kannauj. In a series of tweets, the main opposition party accused members of the ruling party of indulging in fake voting in the Gursahaiganj polling booth of Kannauj. It also alleged that BJP MP Subrat Pathak and his supporters were misbehaving with SP workers and voters at another booth in Kannauj and appealed to the State Election Commission to take notice of it.

The Akhilesh Yadav-led party claimed that the husband of an Independent nominee in Kanpur's Ghatampur was shot and also alleged that Dalits and OBCs were being denied voting rights.

UP civic body elections: Over 20 per cent polling recorded till 11 am

UP civic body elections: A voter turnout of 20.62 per cent was recorded in the first four hours of the final phase of the urban local body polls in UP. Polling was going on smoothly with 23.98 per cent turn out in Ayodhya, 18.1 per cent in Aligarh, 22.8 per cent in Etawah, 28.23 per cent in Gautam Buddh Nagar, 20.33 per cent in Ghaziabad, 14.27 per cent in Kanpur till 11 am, the election office said.

UP local body elections 2023: 10 per cent polling recorded till 9 am

UP local body elections 2023: A voter turnout of around 10 per cent has been recorded in the first two hours of the final phase of the urban local body polls in Uttar Pradesh. Polling is currently underway in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, and Ayodhya and is set to continue till 6 pm.

There have been reports of six fake voters being caught at a polling booth in Mau district.

UP civic polls: BJP has fielded most number of candidates 

UP civic polls: In these civic polls, the BJP has fielded the highest number of candidates among all parties. The saffron camp has fieled as many as 10,758 candidates, including 4,248 women.

O the other hand, the Samajwadi Party has fielded the second highest number of candidates - 5,231 (of whom 2,223 are women), followed by Mayawati's BSP with 3,787 (1,611 women) contestants. The Congress and the AAP have fielded 2,994 (1,395 women) and 2,447 (1,031 women) contestants, respectively.

Over 66 per cent of the total candidates in both phases of the polls are independents.

UP urban local body elections: Four out of the seven mayor seats that have gone to polls today were won by the BJP in the last civic elections in 2017. They are Ghaziabad, Bareilly, Kanpur Nagar and Ayodhya. While the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won the Aligarh and Meerut seats, the SP drew a blank.

Earlier in the first phase of the UP local body elections, around 52 per cent voter turnout was recorded. The first phase of polling was held on May 4 in 37 districts.  The voter turnout was 5.52 per cent less than the poll percentage recorded in these districts in the 2017 elections.

Uttar Pradesh urban local body election: Voting is currently being held across 38 districts amid tight security. Special Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said for the peaceful conduct of the polls, apart from one lakh civil police personnel, 76 companies and 2 platoons of the PAC, 35 companies of CAPF, and 7,935 under-training sub-inspectors have been deployed.

UP ULB polls: Whoever wins in the urban local body polls from Shahjahanpur will create a history of sorts by becoming the first mayor ever of this municipal corporation. Shahjahanpur became a municipal corporation in 2018, a year after the last ULB polls were held in the state. And this time, it has been reserved for a female candidate from the Other Backward Classes.

While the BJP has fielded Archana Verma as its mayoral candidate, its main rival -- the Samajwadi Party -- has given a ticket to Mala Rathore. The SP had initially declared Archana Verma as its candidate but she joined the BJP later.

Altogether, there are eight candidates in the fray, including from the Congress, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Aam Aadmi Party.
