Tripura Assembly Election 2023: Nearly 88 per cent of voting was recorded in the one-day Tripura assembly elections, which were largely peaceful, a senior EC official said on Friday. The elections to the 60-member assembly were held across the northeastern state on Thursday. "An average of 87.63 per cent polling was recorded in the assembly elections, which went till 8.30 or 9 pm on Thursday. The figure excluded the number of polled postal ballots," Additional CEO Subhasish Bandhopadhyay told PTI. Of the total 28.14 lakh voters, over 24.66 lakhs have exercised their franchise, he said. Tripura had, in the 2018 assembly elections, recorded 89.38 per cent voting, while the highest poll percentage was 93 in 2013.

Notably, the Town Bardowali assembly constituency, where Chief Minister Manik Saha is pitted against Congress nominee Asish Kumar Saha, witnessed the lowest voter turnout at 80 per cent, while the Manu assembly seat in South Tripura recorded the highest polling percentage at 92.09, the official said.
Over 90 per cent of voting was recorded in several assembly constituencies in the February 16 polls, he said. "All the polled EVMs were kept in 36 strong rooms where tight security arrangements have been made, besides round-the-clock CCTV surveillance," he said. There will be a three-tier security arrangement for the March 2 counting, he said.

According to election officials, the state's voter turnout was 69.96% as of 3 p.m., which is relatively low. Despite this, a considerable number of voters are still waiting in lines at numerous polling sites during the final hour of voting. Officials expect that the final voter turnout will be more than 85% as per reports.

Tripura Assembly Polls 2023: A 51.35 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 1 pm in the ongoing polling in Tripura for 60 Assembly seats.

As per the Election Commission (EC), Tripura's Dhalai recorded the highest voter turnout of 54.17 per cent.

Gomati saw a voter turnout of 49.69 per cent, Khiwai of 49.67 per cent, North Tripura of 47.57 per cent, Sepahijala of 51.27 per cent, South Tripura of 53.67 per cent, Unakoti of 50.64 per cent and West Tripura of 52.49 per cent.

Why are 2023 Tripura polls important?

Tripura is the first state to go to the polls this year. While polling for Nagaland and Meghalaya assemblies is scheduled to take place on February 27, five more states face elections this year in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The 2023 Tripura polls are important as political pundits see the possibility of a tough contest between the ruling party and the opposition, the first in a year of polls to elect state governments.

Till 2018, the electoral contest in the northeastern state was largely between the Congress and CPI(M), with smaller tribal parties playing minor but at times crucial roles.

The BJP winning the 2023 Tripura Assembly polls for the second consecutive term will give it a big boost ahead of the general elections next year.
