Presidential poll 2022: Value of vote of MPs goes down to 700 from 708 

The value of the vote of a Member of Parliament has gone down to 700 from 708 in the presidential poll scheduled for July 18 due to the absence of a legislative assembly in Jammu and Kashmir.

The value of the vote of an MP in a presidential election is based on the number of elected members in legislative assemblies of states and union territories, including Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir.

BTP MLAs vote for Congress in Rajya Sabha polls

After casting his vote in favour of Congress in Rajya Sabha polls, Bharatiya Tribal Party legislator Rajkumar Roat on Friday targeted its own party chief Velaram Ghoghra, saying he has become "old" to understand the issues, PTI reported.

Rajya Sabha election: 285 MLAs cast votes till 3.30 pm in Maharashtra

As voting is underway for six Rajya Sabha seats in Maharashtra, a total of 285 MLAs cast their votes till 3.30 pm in Maharashtra. Earlier, till 1 pm 260 MLAs had cast their votes and 180 MLAs had cast their votes till 11:30 am. In the Rajya Sabha polls for six seats from Maharashtra, every vote is crucial for the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), of which the NCP is a constituent.

"We are sure that we'll win. The way voting happened, we are confident that BJP candidates will win on both the seats. Some Congress MLAs' votes were dismissed as they violated the rules," said Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar on Rajya Sabha elections.

Srinivas Gowada votes for Congress

Amid speculations of cross-voting, JD(S) MLA K Srinivas Gowda from Kolar district on Friday said that he voted for a Congress candidate as the polling for four Rajya Sabha seats is underway in Karnataka. "I love Congress party and have cast my vote for Congress candidate," stated Srinivas Gowda.

"I was with the Congress party earlier and I am joining the party soon," he added.

Janata Dal (Secular) chief HD Kumaraswamy on Friday alleged "horse-trading" in the Karnataka Rajya Sabha elections claiming that Congress leader Siddaramaiah was pressurising JDS MLAs to not vote for their own party but that of the candidate of the grand old party. "Yes, definitely. He is pressurising them not to vote for JD(S)," Kumaraswamy told media persons on being asked about Siddaramaiah's claims that some JD(S) MLAs were in touch with him.

Polling for the 16 seats spread across states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana and Karnataka will be held today due to the number of candidates exceeding the seats.Some prominent leaders, whose fates will be decided at 5 pm when the counting of the votes will take place, include Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Nirmala Sitharaman, Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala and Mukul Wasnik. 

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the whole process will be videographed, adding that those lodged in jail can vote if they get parole. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar said, "There are elections in four states on Friday and the whole process will be videographed for which we have appointed observers." When asked about legislators lodged in jails, he said, "Those in jail will have to apply for parole and if they get parole, they can vote. Those in preventive detention can also vote."

Notably, all 41 candidates from Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Telangana were elected unopposed on Friday after the biennial elections to 57 Rajya Sabha seats were announced recently.

The polling to elect the members of the Upper House of the Parliament on 16 Rajya Sabha seats spread across four states will take place today amid speculations of horse-trading and fears of cross-voting. Polling is set to begin at 9 am and conclude at 4 pm.

Polling for the upper House of the Parliament will take place on Friday. Notably, all the Rajasthan Congress MLAs have been shifted to Hotel Leela in Amer area where the internet services have been suspended. 

Fearing poaching of legislators ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, the Rajasthan government on Thursday ordered the suspension of internet services in the Amer area of Jaipur district for 12 hours till 9 am on Friday, where Congress MLAs are staying after they returned from Udaipur. The voice calls and broadband services in the area have not been suspended, according to a notification.
