Punjab election result 2022: AAP records landslide victory with 92 seats, Congress reduced to 18

Punjab Assembly Polls 2022: The counting of votes for the recently held 117-seat Punjab election 2022 began at 8 am today (March 10, 2022). Punjab went for polling on February 20, 2022. According to the state's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Punjab, which has over 2.14 crore eligible voters, recorded 71.95 per cent polling, down from 77 per cent recorded in 2017.

Punjab's former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh lost his constituency, Patiala Urban, to an AAP candidate. Congress leader and Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi also lost both his seats. Congress candidate and Bollywood actor Sood also lost from the Moga assembly seat in Punjab.

Shiromani Akali Dal's Bikram Singh Majithia lost from Amritsar East by a margin of 14,408 votes. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal lost election against AAP’s Gurmeet Singh Khudian in the Lambi seat by a margin of over 11,000 votes.

On the other hand, AAP's CM candidate Bhagwant Mann has scored the Dhuri seat he was contesting from.

Meanwhile, as per many exit polls, Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party bagged a massive victory in the state.

According to the top officials, as many as 7,500 personnel have been deputed for the counting process which began at 8 am at 66 locations across the state. Additionally, a three-tier security measure has been set up and 45 companies of Central Armed Police Forces are deployed at the counting centres.

Several surveys predicted Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP, which is in power in Delhi, getting a landslide victory. The surveys also predicted that the ruling Congress will finish a distant second in the state followed by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) which had allied with Bahujan Samaj Party. The BJP and its allies are not predicted to do well, according to the surveys.
