Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Friday offered condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the passing away of his mother Heeraben Modi. "I offer you my condolences. ...I am currently staying in Bodh Gaya and I will pray for her," Dalai Lama said in a statement. "Your mother lived to a good age of 99. She must have been proud to see her son rise to the position of Prime Minister of this great country."

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday expressed his condolences over the demise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s mother and said that it is an `unfortunate thing`. "It`s an unfortunate thing. PM's absence dampens spirit of children on board Vande Bharat express as special invitees

Around 50 students, winners of an essay competition on the indigenously made train, were special invitees to ride the inaugural service on Friday. However, his absence because of a personal loss considerably dampened the spirit of students. The prime minister's mother Hiraben passed away at a hospital in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Modi was scheduled to not just flag off the new train, but inaugurate and launch railway projects to the tune of over Rs 5,000 crore in Bengal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday chaired the second meeting of the National Ganga Council (NGC) meeting in Kolkata via video conferencing. The meeting was attended by the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, and other Union Ministers who are members of the council besides the Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Instead of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav was present at the meeting. The Prime Minister attended the meeting virtually after he performed the last rites of his mother Heeraben who passed away early this morning.
