LIVE Weather Update: Southwest under scrutiny after wave of storm flight cancellations

Hundreds of passengers were left travelers stranded at airports across the country amid an intense winter storm that has killed dozens of people in the United States. Many airlines were forced to cancel flights due to the weather, but Southwest was by far the leader in canceled flights. About 4,000 domestic U.S. Flights were cancelled Monday, according to the tracking website FlightAware, and 2,900 of those were Southwest's.

An intense cold wave gripped entire Himachal Pradesh as minimum temperatures dropped to below freezing point at most places. The minimum temperatures dipped 10-12 degrees below freezing point in high altitude tribal areas, mountain passes, and other higher ranges, while several other places reeled under lower reaches of sub-zero temperature.

Keylong in tribal Lahaul valley recorded minus 7.9 degrees, followed by Kusumseri minus 5.0 degrees, Kalpa minus 3.6 degrees, Manali minus 0.6 degrees, and Bhuntar minus 0.4 degrees. Solan and Shimla recorded a minimum of 2.3 and 4.5 degrees Celsius, in that order.

Parts of the national capital reeled under a cold wave on Tuesday (December 27) as its minimum temperature fell below that of hill stations Dharamshala and Nainital. The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, logged a minimum temperature of 5.6 degrees Celsius -- a notch below normal.

India weather Update: Rajasthan's Mount Abu wakes up to snowfall

In Rajasthan's Mount Abu, the dip in temperature caused snowing. People in Mount Abu woke up to snow-covered grounds. The snow froze on the windows of the vehicles.

A massive winter storm stretching from the Great Lakes all the way down to the Rio Grande along the Mexican border has killed at least 57 people across the US today. 

Thousands of flight cancellations and delays coupled with long lines and missing luggage at airports frustrated U.S. travelers over the Christmas weekend after a massive winter storm snarled airport operations around the country. The travel disruptions continued into Monday (December 26) when airlines canceled over 2,500 flights as of early afternoon, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. 

Meanwhile in the United States, 28 people died in one of the worst weather-related disasters ever to hit western New York. The rest of the United States also was reeling from the ferocious winter storm, with at least another two dozen deaths reported in other parts of the country. 

North India is in the grip of cold wave as Delhi records its lowest temperature. Many states has reached below 10 degrees.
