Delhi Mayor Election 2023: Who is Shelly Oberoi? Know All About New Delhi Mayor

New Delhi: After four attempts to elect the chief of its civic body, Delhi on Wednesday (February 22) elected AAP candidate Shelly Oberoi as the Mayor of Delhi Municipal Corporation. The first-time councillor from Delhi's East Patel Nagar ward, Oberoi won the MCD Elections with 150 votes. 

AAP's Shelly Oberoi defeated BJP's Rekha Gupta by a margin of 34 votes to become the mayor of Delhi, MCD officials announced on Wednesday. Oberoi polled 150 votes while Gupta received 116 votes out of the total 266 votes polled. The voting was held at the Civic Centre.

Shelly Oberoi's Journey from DU Professor to Delhi Mayor

39-year-old first-time councillor Shelly Oberoi has worked as an assistant professor at Delhi University and is also a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association (ICA).

Oberoi has a doctorate in Philosophy From Indira Gandhi National Open University's School of Management Studies. The new MCD Mayor has been a scholar and has received the 'Miss Kamala Rani Prize' and scholarship for emerging meritorious among all the students in college.

Selly Oberoi joined the Aam Aadmi Party as an activist and went on to become the party`s state Mahila Morcha vice-president and continued till 2020.

A councillor from ward no 86 of Patel Nagar constituency, Shelly was named mayoral candidate weeks after the AAP secured the majority in the MCD election.

In her first speech in the MCD House, Oberoi said, "All of you have elected me as the Mayor of Delhi. The people of the national capital have dreamt of making Delhi clean and beautiful, we all have to work together for this. We will run the House as per the Constitution and the DMC Act."

Meanwhile, Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia congratulated Oberoi for her election as Delhi Mayor and launched an attack on BJP.  "The goons lost, the public won. Many congratulations to all the workers as the AAP candidate has become the mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. Once again whole hearted gratitude to the people of Delhi. Many many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP," he said in a tweet in Hindi
