New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death penalty awarded to three convicts in the infamous Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. The judgement was delivered by a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan. The apex court while delivering the verdict said that the death row convicts failed to point out "error" in the judgement.

July 9, 2018: The Supreme Court upheld the death penalty awarded to three of the four convicts - Mukesh (29), Pawan Gupta (22) and Vinay Sharma (23) - who are on death row had filed a review petition against their punishment.

December 16, 2012: Six men, including the 17-year-old juvenile, gang-rape a 23-year-old physiotherapy intern in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. The girl and her friend were returning home after watching a movie when they were coaxed into the bus by the accused, who then beat up her friend before taking turns in raping her.The girl succumbed to her injuries in a Singapore hospital on December 29, 2012.

The convicts - Akshay, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh - challenged the Delhi High Court order which had sentenced them to the gallows.
