Chennai School Holiday Tomorrow: Amid Heavy Rains Today, Administration Issues Order

In a relief for parents and children, the District Magistrate has decided to keep the schools closed in Chennai tomorrow, i.e November 15 in the wake of the heavy rains that continue to lash the capital city. District Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade issued an order in this regard. On the other hand, Puducherry has also declared a one-day holiday for schools and colleges, said reports.

A holiday has also been declared for all schools in Tiruvallur District on November 15, due to continuous heavy rainfall in the district, said an order by District Collector Dr T Prabhushankar.

Waterlogging has been reported in several parts of Chennai after heavy rainfall in the region including Mount Road and T Nagar areas. Rain lashed several parts of Chennai and Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, Puducherry and Karaikal area today under the influence of the Northeast monsoon.

B Geetha, Scientist 'D' Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai told news agency ANI that the sky is likely to remain cloudy for the next 24 hours. "Moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur at few places, with heavy spells at times in some areas. Maximum temperature is likely to be 26-27°C and minimum temperature is likely to be around 23°C," she said.

Under the influence of Monday's upper air cyclonic circulation over Andaman-Nicobar Islands and adjoining areas of Andaman Sea and Southeast Bay of Bengal, a Low-Pressure Area was formed at 5:30 hrs IST today over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas and lay at 08:30 hrs IST over the same region.

The Tamil Nadu government has already declared a holiday for educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Mayiladuthurai District today in the wake of the heavy rainfall. 

It may be noted that the schools and colleges are already shut in northern part of the country tomorrow on the occasion of Bhai Duj. Bhai Dooj, a significant Hindu festival akin to Raksha Bandhan, is scheduled to be observed on November 15 this year. Also recognized as Bhai Tika, Bhaubeej, Bhai Phonta, or Bhratri Dwitiya, this festival commemorates the unique and cherished bond shared between siblings.

In Delhi, schools are closed till November 18 due to severe air pollution.
