New Delhi: Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition in which a child is significantly overweight for his/her age and height. Childhood obesity has become a common health threat among children. As per the American Heart Association, today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963.

 

Lifestyle, genetic and hormonal issues are the main factors that contribute to childhood obesity.

Obesity does not only affect your child's physical health, but also have adverse effects on their social and emotional well-being. Here are some health conditions associated with childhood obesity-

Children who are obese have an increased risk of -

  • High cholesterol and high blood pressure, which are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
  • Breathing problems such as asthma, obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Bone and joint problems.
  • Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
  • Fatty liver disease, gallstones, and gastro-esophageal reflux (heartburn)
  • Obesity as adults.
  • Social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem.
  • Depression, behavioral issues, and learning problems in school.

 

However, parents have a huge role in preventing childhood obesity. Taking precautionary measures such as healthy lifestyle habits, including a good diet and physical activity, can help lower the risk of your child from becoming overweight. Preventing childhood obesity avoids health risks of your child now and later in life.
