New Delhi: A conjoined birth is always heart-breaking, owing to the numerous health risks it puts the children at. Their chance at living a normal life is often jeopardised because of that.

US-based conjoined Delaney twins, who have been creating waves through their page on Facebook, went through a successful surgery to the surprise of their parents, just before their first birthday.

An 11-hour surgery is what it took to separate their heads from each other, a report in the Daily Mail said.

The twins, Erin and Abby Delaney, suffered from a rare condition called craniopagus, which is not very common even among conjoined twins. Before the operation, they were implanted with balloons at the head to expand the skin to have an easy operation, it was reported.

The twins' parents, Heather and Riley, got to know about the condition of their babies 11-weeks into the pregnancy and took extra precautions to ease themselves into having a healthy delivery in order to give the girls a normal life.

The babies have beaten all the odds to survive and now they have been said to be healthy after the surgery on June 7.
