Ferdinand Monoyer's 181st Birthday: Know about the inventor of 'eye test'

New Delhi: If you are one of those people who wears glasses today to correct your blurry vision, you ought to thank Ferdinand Monoyeron, a French ophthalmologist,​ known for his groundbreaking invention in ophthalmology.

Ferdinand, born on 9 May 1836, is best known for creating the Monoyer chart, as well as inventing the dioptre - the unit of measure of the optical power of a lens - in 1872.

To honour the French ophthalmologist on his 181st birthday, Google has created an animated doodle on its homepage.

The doodle appearing on Google's homepage highlights the Monoyeron chart – an eye chart he invented that tests your visual acuity.

Interestingly, a careful look at the chart not only reveals a different diopter, from smallest to largest, but also shows the ophthalmologist's name – starting with the second line from the bottom. Take a look at the Google doodle below!

The diopter and the Monoyer chart are being used by opthalmologists across the world since 1872.

Monoyer died at the age of 76 on 11 July 1912.
