14th Zika virus infection in South Korea

South Korea has confirmed another case of the Zika virus infection, raising the number of people infected with the virus here to 14, health authorities said Saturday.

Seoul: South Korea has confirmed another case of the Zika virus infection, raising the number of people infected with the virus here to 14, health authorities said Saturday.

A 34-year-old man was confirmed to have been infected with the mosquito-borne virus on Friday, Yonhap news agency reported.

He is presumed to have been bitten by a mosquito during his trip to Thailand from September 8 to 16.

The man remains in stable condition and is currently receiving an additional test at a Seoul hospital.

Ten South Koreans infected with the virus have travelled to Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines and Vietnam while four others made a trip to Central and South American nations such as Brazil, the Korea Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said.

The virus, first discovered in Africa, is almost non-life threatening but is linked to thousands of birth defects in newborn babies like abnormally small heads and improperly developed brains.
