New Delhi: Australia is shifting positions and there's nothing we can do about it, except probably change our world maps and GPS coordinates to remain in congruence with its changing position.

As per a report in the New York Times, Australia is drifting upwards so fast that “by geological standards, it is practically flying.”

No, there's no ghostly power that is making that happen, it's just the tectonic plates on which our continents float and Australia's plates are just moving faster, averaging about 2.7 inches per year.

It is moving north with a slight clockwise rotation.

According to India Today, Australia's latitude and longitude have been corrected four times in the past 50 years, with the next adjustment of 4.9 feet due at the end of this year. In 1994, its location was adjusted by about 656 feet.
