Mumbai: Lord Krishna – the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu – was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in Mathura (in modern day Uttar Pradesh). He spent his childhood in Vrindavan (where he was raised by Yashoda and Nanda); later joined by the Pandavas in the war against the Kauravas in Kurukshetra (in modern day Haryana). He eventually settled in Dwarka (in modern day Gujarat).

Shri Krishna was born as a human and hence he was destined to bear the agony every living being was meant to suffer. And his journey on earth had to come to an end. Unlike Rama, Shri Krishna’s end came after being hit by an arrow aimed by a hunter, who mistook the Lord to be a deer, from a distance.

Rama, left for the heavenly abode by immersing himself in the Sarayu River. But Krishna was “killed”.

What had happened?

Shri Krishna was meditating under a tree at a spot (which is now named Bhalka Tirtha, near Prabhas Kshetra in Veraval, Somnath, on the coast of Gujarat) in a reclining posture. A hunter mistook him to be a deer and aimed an arrow at the Lord from a distance. On reaching closer to the Lord, the hunter named Jara realised the grave mistake he had committed. But Krishna, who was aware of destiny, pardoned him and transcended to his abode.
