Kartik Poornima or Dev Deepavali 2016: Here’s how it is celebrated

Mumbai: The auspicious day of Kartik Poornima also celebrated as Dev Deepavali marks the culmination of the festive season. A number of rituals are concluded to mark the full moon day in the holiest month of Kartik according to the Hindu Lunar calendar.

According to Drikpanchang.com, the Kartik Poornima tithi began on November 13 at 23:17 PM and will conclude on November 14 at 19:22 PM.

People begin the celebrations with a dip in the holy Ganga or any other water body. This ritual is known as Kartik Snan. The Tulsi Vivah ceremony (which marks the matrimonial alliance of the sacred Tulsi plant and Lord Vishnu’s Shaligram form) that commenced on Shukla Paksha Ekadshi, also concludes today.

It is also a day that marks the triumph of Lord Shiva over demon Tripurasura. To rejoice the end of the demon, the Devas celebrated Deepavali and hence the name Dev Deepavali. Hence, on this day, temples are decorated with earthen lamps to symbolise the victory of good over evil.
