Tata Motors, the homegrown automaker is currently the largest electric car maker in the country. Starting its EV journey with Tata Nexon EV, the homegrown automaker now has Tata Tiago EV and Tata Tigor EV in the portflio as well, giving the automaker an leverage over other EV makers in terms of price parity and also sheer number of choices. Tata Motors is not stopping here and already announced a slew of car launches in the coming years. With the existing portfolio being converted to electric vehicles, one can't help but imagine all the old Tata vehicles making a comeback as EVs.
While Tata showcased the Tata Sierra EV concept at the Auto Expo, rumours are abuzz that Tata Nano might make a comeback as an electric vehicle. With the implementation of BS6 emission norms in April 2020, Tata Motors discontinued the Nano hatchback. The ambitious project of former Tata Chairman Ratan Tata was touted as the cheapest car in the world.
Despite having a price tag starting at only Rs 1 lakh, Tata Nano failed to generate volume for the carmaker in the country and was eventually discontinued. The small hatchback was offered with a 624cc twin-cylinder petrol engine with 38bhp and 51Nm output and having 4-speed manual or AMT gearbox.
If rumours are to be believed, the automaker might be considering re-launching the Tata Nano with an electric drive and we have already seen multiple concepts of the same running on the Indian roads. Even Ratan Tata himself drives an electric Nano, modified to run on battery power.
Tata Nano can feature Tata Ziptron high-voltage technology, consisting of a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor with a smaller battery good enough for 250-300 km drive range.
