File photo New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Fare Fixation Committee in a meeting on Monday declared that the metro fares will be hiked with effect from Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, the Delhi Assembly had passed a resolution against the proposed metro fare hike.
Participating in the discussion on the resolution, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that the Metro fares are being increased so that cab aggregators Ola and Uber will be cheaper and people would give up using Metro.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has locked horns with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) over the proposed hike to be enforced from October 10 - the second this year. The last hike was effected in May.
The AAP lawmakers last week urged the DMRC to refrain from increasing the travel fare, saying that doing so would violate the law as the metro rail corporation cannot hike the tariff twice within six months.
On September 30, the DMRC claimed that hike in the metro fare was essential in order to meet the input costs and keep providing world class service to the passengers commuting through it.
