India vs Australia, 1st Test, Day 2, Live Updates: R Ashwin shines as India lead by 62 runs at stumps

Fifteen wickets fell as Indian bowlers ruled supreme on a balmy day at a ground once renowned for big scores, the last coming in the final 25 minutes when Pat Cummins bowled Prithvi Shaw for four to continue the India opener`s poor run of form.

Adelaide: India dismissed Australia for 191 in 72 overs on Friday to take a 62-run first-innings lead that looked highly unlikely in the first half-hour of a dramatic second day of the day-night first test at Adelaide Oval. Fifteen wickets fell as bowlers ruled supreme on a balmy day at a ground once renowned for big scores, the last coming in the final 25 minutes when Pat Cummins bowled Prithvi Shaw for four to continue the India opener`s poor run of form.

Shaw`s opening partner Mayank Agarwal and nightwatchman Jasprit Bumrah survived a nervous last couple of overs under the lights to take India`s second innings tally to 9-1 and the lead to 62 runs at close of play. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin combined with paceman Umesh Yadav and Bumrah earlier did the damage for the tourists, bowling with discipline and taking wickets in bursts to break up potential partnerships.

While Tim Paine played a captain`s innings of 73 not out to limit the damage, India will be disappointed with a string of dropped catches. At Tea break, Australia were placed in a precarious situation at 92/5 and still trail by 152 runs in reply to India`s first-inning score of 244.

Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne earlier took the charge as Australia chased 244 runs, following the dismissals of Matthew Wade and Joe Burns. Pacer Jaspreet Bumrah has achieved an early breakthrough for India by removing both Australian openers Wade and Burns in quick succession putting pressure as Aussies began a 244-run chase on the Day of the 1st Test against Australia in Adelaide. Joe Burns (8 off 41 balls) and Mathew Wade (8 off 51 balls) were prepared to play the tough waiting game till Bumrah (8-5-8-2) bowled fast and full to trap both of them leg before as India ended on the right side of 'Umpires Call' on both occasions.

Umesh Yadav (6-4-6-0) and Mohammed Shami (9-0-19-0) also kept things tight although they were a little more on the shorter side during the session compared to Bumrah, who reaped dividends for bowling fuller deliveries.

India earlier had a disappointing on Day 2 against Australia in Adelaide on Friday from their overnight score of 233/6. India's tail-enders contributed precious little as the first innings folded at 244 early on the second day of the first Day/Night Test against Australia on Friday. Mitchell Starc (4/53 in 21 overs) and Pat Cummins (3/48 in 21.1 overs) dismissed the last four batsmen for an addition of only 11 runs to the overnight score.

In fact, India lost seven wickets for 56 runs starting with Virat Kohli's run-out engineered by a poor judgement call from vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane. On Friday, Ravichandran Ashwin (15) got one to rear up from length as Cummins got his second wicket and India's seventh in the first over of the day. Wriddhiman Saha (9) also didn't trouble the scorers getting out on his overnight tally chasing a wide delivery from Starc. Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah hit a boundary each but that was just a tail-ender's bravado as the innings folded in just 25 balls on the second day.

If one goes by how pink ball matches at Adelaide have panned out, India have scored at least 75 runs less than what should have been a fighting first innings total. In the end, Kohli's dismissal cost them dearly.

Australia XI: Joe Burns, Matthew Wade, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Tim Paine (c & wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

India XI: Prithvi Shaw, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah

16:00 PM

Nathan Lyon survives after a successful DRS review.

15:56 PM

Australia 156/8 after 64 Overs; Tim Paine (C) (W) 55, Nathan Lyon 1

Indian bowlers have completely dominated the second day of the 1st Test being played in Adelaide by keeping a good line and length and restricting Aussies from playing their natural attacking game as they chase the 244-run target set by Kohli's men. However, Tim Paine has played a vital knock for his team when needed most. Australia are now 88 runs short.

15:26 PM

WICKET! Mitchell Starc departs for 15 runs from 16 deliveries following an excellent throw by Prithvi Shaw from the deep to Wriddhiman Saha. Nathan Lyon is the new man in. Mitchell Starc run out (Prithvi Shaw/Wriddhiman Saha) 15 (16)

Cummins c Rahane b U Yadav 0 (3)

14:56 PM

WICKET!!  This time, Umesh Yadav strikes for India, traps Labuschagne plumb in front, the umpire raises his finger, the Aussie opts for DRS but the replays show the ball was going to hit off and middle stump.

TEA BREAK!

It's time for a tea break! Australia have scored 92 runs for the loss of five wickets in 48 overs. The hosts trail India by 152 runs. India would be delighted with how the second session on Day 2 has gone. Australia could manage just 59 runs in 29 overs while losing three wickets. R Ashwin's triple strike has completely dented the Australian run chase. India are very much on top with match in their control so far.

14:11 PM

Australia are in deep trouble at the moment after losing five wickets in a short span. Just 18 runs have been scored in the last 10 overs, which is an indication of the dominance of the Team India bowlers over the Hosts.

13:58 PM

Skipper Kohli completes a brilliant catch at midwicket to remove Green. Ashwin now has three wickets under his belt and Australians are under the pump here. Green attempted a pull shot but it didn't come out clean as Kohli put in a perfect dive to pull off a screamer. Maiden over. Tim paine is the new man in.

Another WICKET!! Ravi Ashwin strikes for the third time. Man dismissed is young Cameron Green who was making his debut. Kudos to skipper Kohli who dived to complete a stunning catch. Australia are in trouble.

13:48 PM

Take a look at how R Ashwin sends Travis Head packing, putting Australia in strife #AUSvIND

13:13 PM

Ashwin strikes again! Two wickets for Ashwin now and the off-spinner is proving to be Australia's nemesis here. Travis Head goes cheaply after edging his shot to the bowler. He was looking to play on leg with the ball drifting into him but the delivery straightened and took the leading edge to Ashwin. Cameron Green is the new man in and gets off the mark immediately with a single.

13:07 PM

A wicket for India as Ashwin strikes!! R Ashwin gets the big wicket of Steve Smith. Smith is caught in the slips and a solid catch too. What a start from the off-spinner.

12:36 PM

Australia 41/2 after 24 Overs; Marnus Labuschagne 22, Steven Smith 1.

Another brilliant spell by Shami. This is his second consecutive maiden. Both Shami and Bumrah have able to deliver good line and length and received support from the fielders.

12:31 PM

Australia 41/2 after 23 Overs,  ( Marnus Labuschagne 22, Steven Smith 1)

Labuschagne has been quite lucky. This time he has been dropped by Shaw at square leg. It was a simple catch but a seemingly lazy Shaw messed it up. Bumrah, however, was not disheartened as he got one past Labuschagne's outside edge immediately before inducing an edge that fell just short of a slip fielder. Just one from the over.

12:23 PM

Smith, Labuschagne resume run chase post-dinner break.

Mohammed Shami has been brought into the attack. Shami goes full and straight to Burns, the batsman flicks it and collects two runs. Shami is targetting the pads but Burns is watchful. Confident forward defence. Just two from this over.

10:40 AM

After 7 overs, Australia 8/0 ( Matthew Wade 6, Joe Burns 2).

10:37 AM

Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav keep up the pressure on Aussies. Bumrah with four maidens on the trot and brilliant control of the ball from Umesh Yadav has restricted Australians for big shots initially.

10:35 AM

India's appeal for caught behind rejected. Team India have opted not to review, having initially appealed a caught behind call. Jasprit Bumrah's short ball delivery to Joe Burns rose sharply, prompting the visitors to claim a catch on the basis that the ball brushed Burns' shirt en route to the keeper.
