London: A rare copy of the first issue of Action Comics, famed for Superman’s debut, has become the world’s most expensive comic after fetching 2.16 million dollars (1.4 million pounds) at an auction.
The copy, which was auctioned online for a starting bid of just 1 dollar with a reserve price of 900,000 dollars, was published in 1938 and cost 10 cents, the BBC reported.
The buyer or seller’s name was not disclosed, but there is speculation that it was owned by actor Nicolas Cage.
It is the first time a comic book has broken the $2m barrier, and about 100 copies of Action Comics Number 1 are thought to be in existence, but only a handful of those are in good condition.
Another copy of the same issue sold for a then record-breaking 1.5 million dollars in March last year, but it was not in as good condition as the copy that sold through New York-based ComicConnect.
The copy is said to have been stolen in 2000 and was thought to have been lost until it was recovered in a California storage shed in April this year, just like an issue owned by Cage.
The Hollywood star bought his copy of Action Comics Number 1 for 150,000 dollars in 1997.
