Mumbai: Ever since a 23-year-old paramedical student was brutally gang-raped in December last year, politicians and public figures have come up with bizarre statements that have subsequently led to a nation wide outrage.
After Abhijit Mukherjee’s ‘dented and painted’ remarks on women, followed by a number of other absurd statements, here comes Abu Azmi’s blatant comments on the rising number of rape cases in the country.
Abu Azmi, a politician and a renowned figure in the city of Mumbai, who also happens to be actress Ayesha Takia’s father-in-law, has said that girls shouldn’t hang-out with male friends at public places. And this has left the Azmi and the Takia families in sheer embarrassment. Takia’s sister Natasha, meanwhile, is getting married to a Swedish man and wedding preparations are on in full swing in the Takia family.
And with Azmi making such sexist comments, the festivities have dampened a lot.
“Ayesha`s sister Natasha who aspired to follow her sister into films has now given up her starry dreams and is getting married to a foreigner. Can you imagine, at a time when Ayesha`s sister is tying the knot with a foreigner, Ayesha`s father-in-law says it`s against Indian culture for Indian women to be seen in male company? The Takia household is swarming with relatives and Natsasha`s husband`s relatives from abroad. The family has been deeply embarrassed and shamed by Abu Azmi`s remarks,” TOI quoted a source as saying.
However, Takia defended her father-in-law’s statement and tweeted, “My father in law is the head of r family,v all lov n respect him alot. I have my own mindset which dosent hav 2 match with every1 even when its sum1 i care 4 , lov n respect deeply(sic).”
