New Delhi: He is probably the world’s richest cat. Four-year-old Tommaso has inherited €10 mn from his mistress who adopted him a few years ago from the streets of Rome.
Tommaso’s mistress passed away last month leaving him with flats and houses worth an estimated €10 mn scattered from Milan in the north to Calabria in the south.
In a handwritten will, Tommaso`s mistress gave her lawyers the task of looking for an animal welfare body who could take care of Tommaso and be in charge of the inheritance.
One of the lawyers, Anna Orecchioni, told a Rome daily that they considered several organisations without getting adequate guarantees of the cat`s future comfort and welfare. Meanwhile, the old lady met a fellow cat-lover and a nurse names Stefania – in a park. "Sometimes I`d go to her house so my cat could play with Tommaso," Stefania said to the daily.
As the old lady health deteriorated, Stefania began to take care of her.
"She needed someone to help her move around, shower and eat. I looked after until the end," she said.
Under the Italian law, animals cannot inherit directly. They can be only be beneficiaries if a suitable trustee is found. The elderly widow decided to make Stefania the trustee.
Tommaso`s trustee, who is now looking after him an undisclosed address outside Rome, said: "I had no idea the signora had such wealth."
