Making a film on a best seller is never easy. The expectations are high and in most cases the film never matches up to the reader’s imagination. This week’s other release ‘Hunger Games’ is based on a book of the same name written by Suzanne Collins.
A futuristic theme, the story is set in post-apocalyptic Northern America, in a country called Panem. The plot is about an annual game that people of Panem indulge in where two contestants (a boy and a girl) from each of the districts compete in a deadly battle for the ultimate prize. The entire nation watches as teenagers battle in a gruesome game and fight each other to death. Archer Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) enters the contest with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) and the two must fight to survive in the deadly forest which is ruled by absurd rules of the government. The film may be gruesome for some as the fights between the teenagers are gory and unpleasant. The film primarily works because of its lead cast. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson give fine performances as teenagers up for sacrifice. The narrative is good and it builds up the suspense well and manages to keep the viewer hooked. The camera work is superb and makes the film edgy. If you are fan of fantasy fiction, ‘Hunger Games’ will not disappoint you. Ratings: Three cheers for this one!
