Tata Tiago prices may be hiked

Tata launched the Tiago at a competitive price of Rs 3.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). While the introductory price did get buyers interested, Tata Motors’ vice president of sales & network admitted that it would be difficult to hold on to it. Now it looks like the hatchback may get more expensive.

Around 3000 units of the car were sold in the first month of its launch, which was a fairly moderate response, considering how well the car fared in our road test. Sources now say the Tiago is gaining pace, with some dealers reporting a waiting period of up to one month. The company’s Sanand plant is churning out over 100 Tiagos every day and Tata may even start an additional production shift to tackle any backlog since the unit has the capacity to produce around 1200 cars a day. Dealers have reportedly received a revised price list already, indicating a price rise of around Rs 3000, though a Tata spokesperson has denied any price revision.

Launched in April 2016, the Tiago (formerly named the Zica) is available in five variants – XB, XE, XM, XT and XZ. Prices for the petrol Tiago start at Rs 3.20 lakh and go up to Rs 4.75 lakh, while the diesel costs between Rs 3.95 and Rs 5.54 lakh, putting it right in between the Nano and Bolt.

The car is available with two engine options, i.e. the ‘Revotron’ three-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol mill that makes 85 PS of power and 114 Nm of torque, and the ‘Revotorq’ three-cylinder, 1.1-litre unit that makes 70 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque. Both engines come mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.

Features on offer include dual airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), reverse parking sensors, a multifunction steering wheel, height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a Harman-developed ConnectNext infotainment system with eight speakers and USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity.
