Volkswagen has always been known for dishing out some of the safest cars on the planet. It is no surprise then, that most of the brand's offerings score full five stars in crash tests conducted by various NCAP authorities across the globe.

What's good to note, is that it isn't just the big boys from the VW stable that score big marks. Entry level offerings in the portfolio, such as the Polo and the Vento have fared well too.

The Tiguan - VW's mid-size SUV - has added yet another feather in its cap. It was awarded "Best in Class" in the "Small off-roader" segment, by the Euro NCAP for the year 2016. Volkswagen was quick to point out that NCAP test standards were made even more stringent for this year, by adding child-size dummies into the equation. Nevertheless, it scored a five-star rating, based on proactive occupant protection system for children and adults, pedestrian protection and driver assistance systems.

"The new Tiguan achieved an excellent result in occupant protection for adults and children. Thanks to the standard ISOFIX and Top Tether child seat anchors in combination with safety belt tensioners on the second row of seats, children and adults are very well protected in the event of any frontal or side impact," read a press release issued by Volkswagen. Features such as its pedestrian and ambient traffic monitoring system, electronic stability control (ESC) and the lane-keeping 'Lane Assist' system are standard on the global-spec Tiguan, which contributed to it getting the 'Best in Class' tag.

Volkswagen is actively considering the Tiguan for India and even showcased the SUV at the 2016 Auto Expo as well. The German automaker has also developed a larger 7-seater version of the Tiguan, dubbed the 'Allspace', which we think fits the Indian market better. The SUV will make its way to India via the CKD route and is likely to feature most of the safety features that give it the bragging rights of being the best.
